The unprecedented demand for talent, accompanied by a shrinking available pool for IT/ BPO industry, poses a challenge for organisations.

Studies have stated that the probability of enhancing the pool for your company could be higher if the employer branding initiative is paid more attention. Good branding helps attract prospective candidates’ attention and creates in them a desire to apply to the company. Employment brands help organisations break through the clutter of information overload, and the brand positioning helps candidates reduce their decision-making time and enhances joining outcomes.

This challenge is felt even more acutely by the smaller and niche segment companies in the IT-BPO industry. At the NASSCOM HR Forum, the challenges were addressed in two separate sessions:

  • Employer Branding and Recruitment Processes
  • Retention through Employee Engagement

NASSCOM BPO Strategy Summit 2008

S Nagarajan, Founder & Chief People Officer, in his keynote address on ‘Thinking Global, Acting Local' at the Nasscom BPO Strategy Summit 2008 emphasized the need for collective approach by the different stakeholders to hold India's stand as the “Outsourcing Destination of Choice”.

“For an industry that has seen $11 billion revenue, provided 7 lakh people direct employment and three to four times more indirect employment, there seems to be disconnect surrounding it. This could be largely due to a social order change. Acting locally, the industry should tie up with educational institutions to offer ‘Business Process Education' as a subject or course in order to inculcate a career bent of mind among youngsters” said S Nagarajan, as one of the panelist at the valedictory ceremony. He also urged BPO companies to engage themselves in corporate social responsibility activities, and conduct annual events city-wise to generate better awareness about the industry in the minds of the public.

He was joined by Mr Pramod Bhasin, Vice-Chairman of Nasscom, and President and Chief Executive Officer, Genpact who highlighted the need for Indian BPO companies to “Think Global”. The aim of this special panelist was to come together to debate, deliberate as also throw light on how the BPO sector with its global processes and local delivery is actually contributing back to the country through employment, education, CSR, contribution to families, non-metros development and many other sectors which serve the BPO industry.
